Family May Have Saved Nursing Home Resident by Transferring Him

December 24, 2014 Blog Post by Barry G. Doyle

The family of a resident of the Carbondale Rehab and Nursing Center in Carbondale, Illinois may have saved life of their family member when they made the decision to transfer him out of the Carbondale Rehab and Nursing Center.

For over two weeks, the resident was suffering from an inability to urinate. According to the notes written by the Licensed Practical Nurse on duty, the resident expressed discomfort and an inability to urinate.

According to the nurse, she reported the issue to her supervisor who was supposed to notify the resident’s physician. There seems to be no proof whether or not that actually happened. What we do know is that for over two weeks, the LPN made no effort to follow up on the problem.

When the resident arrived at his new nursing home, he was immediately given a catheter and relieved of almost a quart of urine.

The inability to urinate can have many causes. Some are more serious than others but kidney stones, infection, and adverse reactions to medications are a few. If untreated, the bladder can rupture, setting highly toxic urine through the system.

Nursing home neglect takes many forms, but the essence is the same. It’s a simple failure to care. Luckily, in this instance, the resident was lucky enough to be moving to a nursing home with staff who do.
