Three residents developed dangerous bedsores while at the Providence Downers Grove in Downers Grove, Illinois. The first resident was admitted to the facility in late December of last year. By the end of January, her stage 2 bedsore had developed to a stage 4. Bedsores are categorized into 4 stages. Stage 4 is the worst case. Complications from bed sores may be the basis of a wrongful death lawsuit.
A second resident also developed a worsening bedsore. In this case, there was no care plan to address the wound until it reached stage 2. Care plans are standard procedure for any wound, and a care plan should be developed immediately upon detection.
A third resident also developed a stage 2 pressure ulcer while a resident of Providence Downers Grove.
In each of these cases, the bedsore developed on the residents’ coccyx (tailbone). One of the victims stated that the staff scraped her backside every time they placed and removed her from the bedpan.
The fact that all of these bedsores developed in the same place could be an indication that there is a significant nursing home neglect problem at Providence Downers Grove. Either there are not enough staff to properly care for pressure ulcers, or the staff hasn’t been properly trained.
A bedsore should never develop in a nursing home, and if a resident enters the nursing home with a bedsore, they should never get any worse.
Bedsores, also known as pressure ulcers and pressure sores, are extremely dangerous. Frequently, they prove fatal making them one of the highest priorities for nursing homes like Providence Downers Grove. Pressure ulcers develop when residents are malnourished, left in one spot for too long, or left in damp clothing.
Treating them takes dedication and time, which is why they are a leading indicator of nursing home neglect.
