Two residents at the Geneva Nursing and Rehab Center in Geneva, Illinois were seriously injured due to nursing home falls they experienced at the facility. One of the resident’s spine was fractured and another required six staple sutures to the back of her head.
The first resident is an 86-year-old Alzheimer’s patient who was injured in a fall. In five months prior he fell three times while a resident in the nursing home. The second and third falls took place in the bathroom. The nursing home investigation revealed that the resident frequently attempted to use the bathroom without help despite limited mobility. The second fall resulted in a fractured spine.
The second resident to receive a serious injury at Geneva Nursing and Rehab Center was also an elderly resident suffering from dementia. She also fell two times in a matter of a few weeks. The second fall, from her bed, resulted in a severe laceration to the head requiring multiple staples to close.
At the time, the plan-of-care called for the use of floor mats to protect the resident in case she fell from the bed. According to the facility, those mats were present. The nursing home representative had no explanation for how the injury could have occurred.
Nursing home falls are extremely dangerous but, unlike falls that occur outside the nursing home, they are also fairly predictable. Nursing homes are supposed to conduct regular evaluation to determine whether a resident is likely to experience a fall and put interventions in place to prevent these injuries from happening.
