A resident at the Lakewood Nursing and Rehab Center in Plainfield was not given her scheduled medications for weeks due to failure on the part of the nursing home.
The medication was not available through the Lakewood Nursing and Rehab Center pharmacy, so a family member filled the prescription and brought the medication to the nursing home. The family member kept refilling the prescription, but noticed that the amount of medication was not diminishing as it should.
An investigation was conducted and revealed, based upon the number of pills that were still in the facility, that the resident missed over four weeks of medications.
Medication errors are sadly common in nursing homes. Sometimes the ramifications of these errors are relatively minor, and sometimes they are very serious. Usually, when residents fail to receive their prescribed medications, the reason is an expired prescription from the pharmacy. In this case, the facility had the medications, they just repeatedly failed to give the medication to the resident.
Depending on the medication in question, the lapses could have resulted in pain, disorientation, anxiety, or some other serious side effect.
When people think of medication errors in nursing homes, they usually think of a resident being given the incorrect medication. It’s true that many residents are inadvertently given their roommate’s medication due to nursing home neglect.
Sometimes, however, the medication error can mean that a medication was never given. In this case, day after day, the medications were withheld.
