The Brentwood North Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Riverwoods, Illinois has been fined $20,000 in response to a series of nursing home falls that have left residents hospitalized and in pain. Elderly residents are always susceptible to loss of equilibrium and injuries from falls, but the number of severe falls at the facility goes far beyond mere chance.
On March 8th of last year, a resident of Brentwood North Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center designated as R2 was sent to a nearby Riverwoods, Illinois hospital with rib and sternal fractures.
In October of the same year she was “found on floor with a skin tear to her right forearm and one on left middle arm.” In addition, another rib was fractured.
In November, another rib was fractured in a fall. On Christmas day, she fractured 3 more ribs in another fall.
Over all this time, the only action taken to prevent further falls was a “re-education” plan designed to encourage the resident to call for help before undertaking various activities.
Nursing homes are obligated to conduct a comprehensive fall risk assessment for every resident in the nursing home, and they must develop a fall prevention care plan that properly addresses that risk. Finally, they have to correctly and completely implement that plan.
If you have a loved one who has been repeatedly injured in falls that have taken place in Brentwood North Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center or any Illinois nursing home, he or she may be entitled to compensation for their pain and suffering. The only way to convince nursing homes to provide quality care is by holding them accountable for their failings.
