The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid conduct regular evaluations of nursing homes in the United States. Nursing homes with the worst ratings are put on a list called the Special Focus Facility list.
The nursing homes on this list are in danger of losing their ability to be reimbursed by Medicare and Medicaid for their services. For virtually any nursing home, the loss of Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements is essentially a shutdown notice, and with good reason.
Nursing homes have an ample amount of time to improve the conditions that placed them on the Special Focus Facility list. Some might say they have too much time.
There is good news for Illinois nursing home residents as no Illinois nursing homes have been added to the list since it was last updated. In addition, no Illinois nursing homes were placed on the list of nursing homes that have shown no improvement over the past few months.
Several Illinois nursing homes already on the Special Focus Facility list have recently graduated from the list including the Pinckneyville Health Care Center in Pinckneyville, the Arthur Home in Arthur, the Elmwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Maryville, Meadowbrook Manor in Bolingbrook, and the Plaza Nursing and Rehab Center in Midlothian.
The Special Focus Facility list was last updated in mid December of 2013.
